The first woman to take on the role as James Bond has inspired other women to pursue careers in the industry, says a journalist.
Katherine Johnson has starred in a series of acclaimed films including The Spy Who Loved Me and Tomorrow Never Dies, but she was just 24 when she won an Academy Award for her performance in Casino Royale.
“I was a very young actress when I was nominated for the Oscar for Casino Royale,” Johnson told The Guardian newspaper.
“It’s an amazing achievement to get to this point, to have been nominated for a movie I loved.”
Johnson says she’s grateful for her acting career and that the role has given her inspiration to pursue other film roles.
“In terms of the industry right now, there’s a lot of women who are doing the same thing I am,” she said.
“They’re just starting out, and they’re starting to take it more seriously.”
So, I’m really grateful to have had that role, because it’s helped me realise that I can do this.
“In her role as Bond, Johnson plays the British secret agent in Casino, which opened in December.
Johnson has had success in the UK since her debut role in Casino in 2015.
She is one of two British actresses to have taken on the title role in the spy thriller, alongside Emma Thompson, the first black woman to have played the title character in the franchise.”
The Bond franchise has been a big success, and I’m glad that people are enjoying it, and there’s more people out there looking to be part of it.””
I think it’s something we’re going to see a lot more of in the future.”

“The first black female Bond star to be nominated for an Academy award is a reminder that it’s still far from normal for black women to be considered for the job.
Black women make up just 2.3 per cent of all Academy Award nominees.
Black women make only 10 per cent to 15 per cent and Hispanic women make just 5 per cent, according to the New York Times.
The first female Bond, played by Scottish actor Idris Elba, won the Academy Award in 1979 for his performance as a spy.
The film also won two Oscars for Best Director and Best Cinematography.
However, in 2017, actress Chiwetel Ejiofor was also nominated for her portrayal of 007 in The Queen.
In that film, Ejianfh had to wear a wig, and she did not receive the nomination because she did so while in costume.
