The football world will be waiting to see if it can expect to see the top four European sides crowned European Champions this year, but we know who will win in the first round of the competition.
With the European Championship set to take place in 2021, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has announced the eight teams that will represent Italy in the event.
The two sides in the most likely scenario are: Juventus and Roma.
The former have already won the Champions League and Europa League in 2018 and will play in the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday (16:00 CET) in Rome.
They have also won the Europa League two times in a row.
Roma’s qualification for the final is also based on a UEFA qualifying stage, but there are doubts whether this will be the case this time.
Juventus, on the other hand, are currently playing in the Europa Cup and are also considered favourites to win the trophy.
Roma are yet to win a trophy in their history, having never finished higher than fourth in Serie A and Serie B.
Both teams will face each other in the second round of their respective competitions on Thursday, which will also be their first meeting.
Both Juventus and Sampdoria are already semi-finalists for the Europa league and are guaranteed a place in the final in Rome on Tuesday (16 October).
Both teams have been linked with a potential move to Italy since January 2018, when they were set to join Serie A champions Juventus.
The Bianconeri will be facing a formidable opponent in Juventus, who have won the last two Europa League titles.
Juventus won the European Cup in 2008, and in the same year they won the Serie A title.
Juventus also won both the UEFA Champions League in 2011 and the Europa Ligue in 2014.
Both Juventus and Lazio will have a good chance of securing their place in Italy’s national team squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, with both teams expected to be in action for the opening group match on Wednesday (17 October).
Juventus’ Paulo Dybala and Sampo’s Francesco Totti are both already on the Italian national team.
The team will be joined by three other players from Serie A, while Lazio’s Carlos Bacca, Gianluigi Buffon and Gianluzzi Zola will also join the squad.
