STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Gwenda Bond and John Boyens, and is the highest grossing film of 2017 so far.
Its opening weekend, which began Saturday, saw $7.8 million, the biggest weekend for any Disney-owned movie, behind only the $9.7 million earned by the pic’s predecessor, Star Wars: Episode VIII.
The film’s $40 million opening weekend also eclipses last year’s The Last Jedi’s opening weekend gross of $38.5 million.
Star Wars fans have been eagerly anticipating a sequel for the franchise since Lucasfilm announced in 2017 that it would produce the first installment in 2019.
The movie’s producers, Disney/Lucasfilm, have yet to announce a title for the sequel.
StarWars.com will continue to provide live coverage of the opening weekend at 5 p.m. ET.
